Data Warehouse Management

Project managers have a vast amount of duties when it comes to the infrastructure of warehouse operations, technical and non technical. It is on their shoulders to make a warehouse acceptable and efficient in all ways from distribution to inventory stocking. Managers need to be able to figure out successful training strategies and get more stakeholders on their side. There are many challenges to the job because time, costs and efforts need to be precise no matter what goods the warehouse is dealing with on a consistent basis. One of the myths of data management warehouses is that they are only in a time predicament if they are dealing with perishable (foods and beverages) goods. This is not true because every warehouse deals with difficult circumstances as far as expectations from stakeholders and clients.

No matter how well a project manager runs their data management systems it is pretty common to find several things going out of whack, including:

· Costs. Costs are always a concern of project managers because nearly all projects go over budget. It is only the best planned projects that are able to stay within budget because unexpected costs always seem to come up and the budget has to be re-directed. · Inaccurate ratings. While this has gone down since the induction of the technical data warehouse systems, giving inaccurate readings to stakeholders and clients is still a common affair because it is always going to be difficult to predict exactly how a project is running and where it will end up. · Non-working technical environments. The older versions of data management systems are not the most reliable and they still have a tendency to crash at the most inopportune times. The newer systems are much better at being reliable and they can actually take a big responsibility of the overall picture.

The data management systems in warehouses also have to be aware of the constantly changing policies and procedures that go on. Warehouses are always evolving because the technical sides of the issue are always improving and becoming more efficient. Changes in management, reviews, standards/ procedures for efficiency matters, performance monitoring and business intelligence are always morphing. Those project managers who are trying to monitor all the operations of a warehouse should take these things into account within the daily operations.

While there is no 'secret' to great data warehouse project management there are a few things that make everything better- communication and organization. The better a warehouse is connected to sister warehouses and even competitors will be better for them in the end. Communication connects the entire industry in ways that has not been possible thus far but now it is possible. Organization also improves warehouse operations because it provides for quicker more efficient work.

Above all else, the more a warehouse staff can work together and be a team the better they will perform in the end. After all, great warehouses are built off of great project managers and a great, hard working staff!
