Data Warehouse Project Management TrainingThose who are going into project management are breaking into one of the most challenging and difficult positions in warehouse business. The position is one that is highly needed, yet there are not enough of them (project managers). Data warehouse project management training does not come along all that often because there are not enough knowledgeable managers out there to teach a successful course but the position is highly needed, especially in a world where the technology is so enhanced within the warehouse environment. The old ways of organization and warehouse practices are already long gone and now all the inventory, distribution and day to day operations are computerized and sectored off by warehouse 'zones.' If you are looking to capitalize on high rewards with minimum risks then you will have to have an experience and/ or knowledgeable project manager on your staff. Here is how to train one: Give them short term and long term goals. Project managers have to be goal driven and need to have specific objectives. The role of a project manager really has to be that of a driven person who can work to make others succeed in a fast paced environment. Give them a strategy. When training your project managers make sure you give them the correct strategy to succeed in your specific work space. Every warehouse has their own rules and regulations and let your managers know this ahead of time so that they can stay within company rules and be headed in the right direction strategy wise. Let them know of the challenges that can come up in your line of business. Once again, every warehouse operates a little bit different when the topic of challenges is arisen but some things, like speed and accuracy, are important in any warehouse. For instance, if you are in the distribution business of perishable foods and beverages you will want to remind of the importance of expiration dates and the like. Much of a project manager's job comes down to communication, both within the warehouse and extending beyond to sister warehouses and outside cliental. Coordination on all parts is expected and needed in a streamlined warehouse. Here are some points any warehouse should emphasize when training a new project manager: - Submitting ongoing project updates. Keeping the entire staff updated on the happenings of projects is very important to stay on task. - Cost tracking. Most projects tend to go over budget, big time, so it is important for the project manager to stay on top of where the money is going and why. - Individualized reports on employees. Any workers that are on staff under the manager should have a weekly report done for the manager to oversee. Again, keeping with organization a warehouse can stay on track and focused. - Organize weekly meetings with both the core members of the project team and the stakeholders involved because keeping everyone informed makes it easier to see accomplishments and pitfalls. Data warehouse project management training should be done for new warehouses needing good project managers who are up-to-date in their knowledge in the new systems and ways of working. Project managers are often the key component to an on time (and on budget!) project. |
